The escalator illusion

Summary: Although escalators are complex devices, the physical movements of the visible portions of the steps can be determined fairly easily. For example, for a descending escalator, any given step begins almost immediately to move downward and continues that motion until it reaches the bottom. Perceptually, however, the steps may sometimes seem to move in an unexpected manner. If one views the descending escalator from the bottom of the steps, each top step will first appear to rise, before beginning its descent.
