Summary: Most people with two functioning ears readily notice the apparent direction of external sounds, e.g., left-right, front-back, up-down. It is also common to hear some sounds as originating nearby, while others seem at a distance away from us. It is worth noting that this additional spatial dimension doesn't require any conscious figuring out of the distance. Such percepts arise as immediately as those of direction, although different auditory information provides their basis.
