Summary: Our sense of scale (i.e., our percept that a particular object is close enough to reach by stretching out a hand, versus being at a distance that requires a short walk, versus barely visible across a wide field) is determined by a combination of several factors. Although these may interact with the traditional depth cues described in the article Basic information for depth, there are important differences as well. This article will help clarify how our perceptual systems may contribute to a sense of scale.
