Summary: Polarization is just one aspect of light (like its "color" or its "intensity"). Like ordinary sunglasses, polarizing sunglasses reduce the overall amount of light. However, instead of reducing all types of light equally, they selectively reduce the type of light that is most likely to interfere with vision on a bright day. Understanding how polarization works can also help us understand other visual phenomena.
