Summary: Everyone seems to know the term 20/20 and to recognize that it is a measure of good vision. Many fewer people know the origin of the term, nor the fact that no single number (e.g., 20/20 or 20/80) is sufficient to identify whether one is near-sighted or far-sighted. Nor does a value like 20/20 necessarily indicate that one has – in any sense – perfect vision.
