Summary: The optical (or geometrical) illusion called the Poggendorf Illusion can produce odd experiences well beyond its basic demonstration. Illusory mistakes in the apparent orientation of lines that cross other lines can create the impression that smooth lines are jagged. Although the author first noticed this in episodes of the TV series Star Trek: Voyager, the same effect can be seen in many everyday situations.
