Summary: Cataracts are changes in the character of the lens in the eye. Although some people may have congenital cataracts, or develop them by virtue of an injury, the majority of cataracts are due to aging and/or to the long-term consequences of a lifetime of looking. The critical issue is that the lens within the eye loses its clear transparency and begins to scatter or block light before it reaches the sensitive cells of the retina. The result is a progressive deterioration in vision.
