Summary: The retina (a multilayered tissue at the rear of the eye) includes the cells (called rods and cones) that are the primary receptors for reporting the arrival of incoming light. One requirement for a healthy retina is a good blood supply. If any portion of the retina becomes separated from its normal blood supply, the receptive cells will die and vision will be lost. Surgery by a skillful surgeon can, however, reattach a retina in time to prevent permanent loss, but speedy treatment is crucial.
