Why do people look at the sun despite warnings?

Summary: Although there are certainly many reasons that people engage in any potentially dangerous activity, looking at the sun without adequate protection may result – in part – from a misunderstanding of psychophysics. Specifically, many people fail to realize that how bright a light source appears is often a poor indicator of the actual amount of energy falling on the eye.
