Summary: Early in the 20th century, there were several different schools of thought about the study of perception and about psychological research in general. This article and two other associated ones discuss some of the contributions of those who became known as Gestalt Psychologists. One particular contribution is their insistence that – at an experiential level – any visual display is immediately seen as a combination of figure(s) and a ground. Generally, people are not directly aware of any internal "constructive process" leading up to their final percept.
